Using Still safely

If someone in your life checks your phone, this page is for you.

The honest starting point

No app setting is stronger than someone who controls your devices or can make you unlock them. The steps below reduce the traces Still leaves and the ways it could be discovered — they lower risk, they don't erase it. Trust your own judgement about your situation; you know it better than any app does. And if your relationship feels unsafe or controlling, the people at the National Domestic Abuse Helpline (0808 2000 247, free, 24 hours) or Refuge understand this territory deeply — including how to use technology safely.

Leaving no trace on the phone

Still works in your web browser, and that is a real advantage: you don't have to install anything.

• Use a private (incognito) tab. When you close it, there's no icon, no history, no trace of Still on the device. You'll sign in each time — that's the point.
• Don't add Still to your home screen on any phone someone else picks up or checks.
• If you've used Still in a normal tab before, you can clear it from your browser history (search your browser's name + “delete specific site from history”).

Leaving in a hurry

Inside Still, pressing Esc twice instantly replaces Still with an ordinary web search, and the Back button won't return here from it. One honest limit: on a normal (non-private) tab, the browser's history for this device may still show Still further back. A private tab has no history at all.

The app lock

In Account you can set a PIN. With it on, your Vault, your Mirror history, and the “download everything” export ask for the PIN — even on a device where you're already signed in. Someone scrolling your open phone sees the surface of Still, not your words. On devices that support it you can add fingerprint or face unlock on top; the PIN always works as well.

Your inbox

Emails from Still say “Still” on them, so think about whether your inbox is private:

• Still only ever sends: a sign-up confirmation, password resets, receipts if you subscribe, and gentle reminders — and if you told us in the safety questions that things feel unsafe, reminders are already off; your account gets security email only.
• You can archive or delete Still's emails like any other; marketing email (if you ever opted in) switches off in Account or via the unsubscribe link.
• Consider which email address you sign up with — an inbox only you can reach is safer than a shared one.

What Still will never do

• Still never emails or messages anyone the words you write. Not to you, not to anyone.
• Still never tells anyone you have an account. A partner only ever knows you're here if you personally send them an invite.
• A rant you throw away never left your device. There is nothing to find, anywhere, because it was never sent to us.
• Voice stays on your device. Speaking to Still doesn't send audio anywhere.
